Mary Frances Smiley was the second of the seven children of Shepherd Parkman and Margaret Phoebe (Ward) Smiley. She was born at Melbourne in 1859.

On 25 January 1864, when she was aged 4 and when the family appeared to be living in Gheringhap Road, Geelong, she died of scarlet fever after a 16-day illness. She was buried a day later in the Geelong Eastern Cemetery.
